Bikaner is located in the northern part of Rajasthan and was
founded by the Rathore prince Rao Bhikaji in 1488 A.D. The city is famous
for its historical background, forts, palaces, temples & typical
Rajasthani culture. This was an important trade center between Gujarat sea
port & West Asian countries during medieval period.
The city is bounded by a 7 km long wall and has 5 entrances constructed in
the 18th century. Bikaner has some exquisite palaces, forts, temples,
havelis which signifies its rich history & culture. Also the city is
famous for its Camel Research and Breeding Farm.
Attractions in Bikaner
» Junagarh Fort : This imposing fort was built by
Raja Rai Singh between 1588 & 1593. It has 986 meter long wall with 37
bastions & 2 entrances within which there are some beautiful palaces
made of red sandstone and marble with excellent stone carvings, paintings &
mirror works. The major palaces within the complex include the Anup Mahal,
Hawa Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Phool Mahal, Ganga Mahal, Rang Mahal etc.
» Lalgarh Palace : Built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in
the memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh. This was designed by Sir
Swinton Jacob and is quite imposing with overhanging balconies and delicate
lattice work. Now a days a part of the palace has been converted in to a
hotel and the rest remains a museum with an excellent collection of old
photographs and hunting trophies.
» Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum : This is one
of the best museum in Rajasthan with a rich collection of terracotta ware,
miniature paintings, weapons, & coins dating back to Harappan
civilization, Gupta & Kushan era.
» Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary : Located just 32 kms
from Bikaner is home to a large variety of wild animals. It has a lake which
attracts large number of migratory birds during winter. There is also a pink
sandstone palace, wooden hills & gardens which make it a must visit
destination.
» Camel Research & Breeding Farm : This
government managed farm is 8 km away from the city and is only one of its
kind in Asia. This carries out breeding & training of camels.
Saras Baug is a popular place in Pune, you can visit the sprawling green
lawns and the famous Ganesh Temple constructed by Madhavrao Peshwa.
» Deshnoke Temple : Located 32 kms away from the
city center in the village of Deshnoke & is dedicated to the goddess
Durga. The major attraction of the temple is thousands of rats which are
considered sacred & worshiped by the people.
